Why Low-Quality Sunglasses Can Be Worse Than No Sunglasses

When the sun comes out, most of us instinctively reach for a pair of sunglasses. They make bright days more comfortable and can be a great fashion accessory. But when it comes to protecting your eyes, not all sunglasses are created equal.

In fact, very low-quality sunglasses that lack proper UV protection can sometimes be worse than wearing no sunglasses at all.

Why UV Protection Matters

Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can be harmful to your eyes over time. Long-term exposure to UV rays has been linked to several eye conditions, including:

  • Cataracts

  • Macular degeneration

  • Photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye)

  • Growths on the surface of the eye such as pterygium

Just like your skin, your eyes need protection from UV exposure.

The Problem with low-quality Sunglasses

Many people assume that darker lenses automatically mean better protection. Unfortunately, that isn’t always true.

Dark lenses reduce the amount of visible light entering your eyes, which causes yourpupils to dilate (open wider). If those lenses do not block UV rays, more harmful radiation can actually enter the eye.

This means poorly made sunglasses may give you theillusion of protection while increasing UV exposure.

What to Look for When Choosing Sunglasses

The good news is that protecting your eyes doesn’t mean you have to buy expensive designer brands. The most important thing is to check that your sunglasses provide:

100% UV protection or UV400 protection

This ensures the lenses block both UVA and UVB rays.

You may also want to consider:

  • Larger frames or wraparound styles for better coverage

  • Polarised lenses to reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water or roads

  • Quality lens coatings for clearer, more comfortable vision

Protecting Your Eyes All Year Round

While sunglasses are especially important in summer, UV rays are present throughout the year, even on cloudy days. Wearing sunglasses regularly can help protect your eyes from long-term damage and keep your vision comfortable in bright conditions.
