Astigmatism
An Astigmatic eye has a Cornea shaped like a Rugby ball instead of a football. Astigmatic corneas have two different curves one steeper and the other flatter.
Symptoms
This means that light and the image focuses on more than one point in the eye, which causes blurred vision at both distance and near. This can also cause headaches and eyestrain.
Astigmatism can be detected as part of the routine eye examination . The exact curvature of the cornea can be measured using keratometry or corneal topography.
Treatment
The visual problems can be corrected using spectacles , contact lenses and some forms of Refractive Surgery.
Astigmatism can often be associated with Myopia or Hypermetropia.
